System Setup Checklist - Mac
Clean Install Setup
- Start from MAC OS Install disc (Currently 10.4 or 10.5), and follow the instructions to install the OS.
- Go to System/Accounts, set up two local admin accounts:
- erwin/OIS PW
- Local user admin account & PW (let the user decide and keep a record in OIS). This one is for users to install OS updates and some small applications themselves. Users log in through Outreach active directory.
- Set up Outreach active directory:
- Go to Applications/Utilities/Directory Utility. The interface might look different in 10.4 and 10.5.
- Unlock and then go to “Advanced settings/Services”.
- Check “Active Directory”
- Click the pencil icon to configure it. Domain: outreach.vt.edu
- User experiences: check everything, SMB
- Administrative: Allow Admin by xxx, xxx, OIS
- Mapping: nothing changes
- Finally, click “Bind” to complete the configuration
- Set up IP & DNS.
- Make sure that 198.82.181.219, 198.82.152.40 and 198.82.173.24 are set as the DNS servers for all network devices (wired, wireless and Bluetooth)
- Enter “oia.vt.edu” as search domain.
- Set up OS to update weekly.
- In “Sharing”, enter computer name and uncheck “use dynamic …”.
- In “Accounts”, disable auto login, show name & PW.
- Install software:
- Symantec Endpoint Protection
- MS OFFICE
- Kaseya
- Retrospect
- Firefox
- Adobe Acrobat Reader
- Flash
- Shockwave
- Java
- Restart and log in as domain user, create new mobile account.
